THE Deputy Senate President and first Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Jibrin Barau, has urged the organizers of the planned nationwide protest to reconsider and cancel their plans to avoid disrupting the country’s fragile peace.
He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu is genuinely working to address the nation’s challenges.
The protest is scheduled for Thursday, August 1.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Barau requested that the protest organizers give the government more time to implement the policies and programs outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda for the country’s socio-economic development.
Barau noted that since the government took office on May 29, 2023, it has been diligently working to restore the nation’s glory and set it on a path of progress and prosperity.
He acknowledged that solving decades-long challenges in just one year is unrealistic and noted that the administration is rolling out various short, medium, and long-term measures to tackle these issues.
He highlighted the signing of the North West and South East Development Commissions bills into law by President Tinubu as part of the efforts to address challenges across the country.
Barau warned the protest organizers about how peaceful demonstrations in countries like Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan turned violent and set those nations back.
He urged everyone to deeply consider the potential risks of the protest being hijacked.
“This is our country, and we have no other place to go but the Federal Republic of Nigeria, inherited from our forefathers. Exercise patience and give more time. We will achieve our goals, and the new government’s efforts will bear fruit, by the grace of God,” Barau added.
