PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu departed Abuja yesterday for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 19th G20 Leaders Summit, which will take place on November 18 and 19.
At the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the summit will gather leaders from the world’s largest economies to address key global challenges.
In a statement released yesterday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga shared details about the summit, highlighting its theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.”
The discussions will center on issues such as global poverty, hunger, energy transition, and sustainable development.
Tinubu is expected to advocate for reforms in global governance institutions, a cause Nigeria has consistently supported. “This year’s meeting will focus on combating hunger and poverty, reforming global governance institutions, and ensuring sustainable development and energy transition,” Onanuga stated.
He added that Nigeria has long been a proponent of reforming global governance institutions and has positioned itself as a strong candidate for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Additionally, the President is anticipated to hold bilateral discussions with other world leaders during the summit, focusing on advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms in key areas such as agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.
Tinubu will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development; and Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Arts, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity.
