President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday officially unveiled the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration emblem and launched the associated appeal fund at the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Naijaonpoint reports that the ceremony, which marks the annual kickoff of nationwide fundraising and public sensitisation for fallen heroes and living veterans, set the pace for activities leading to the Armed Forces Remembrance Day scheduled for January 15, 2026.
Speaking at the emblem launch, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the welfare of families of Nigeria’s fallen military personnel as well as veterans who dedicated their lives to securing the nation.
While details of his address were not immediately released, the President stressed the importance of honouring “men and women who paid the supreme price so Nigeria can remain standing.”
The event drew senior government functionaries and top security chiefs, including the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye.
Their presence underscored the symbolic significance of the annual emblem launch, which serves as a national call to support military families and appreciate the sacrifices of serving and retired personnel.
Meanwhile, a security and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sack the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
Naijaonpoint reports that he made this demand following the resignation of the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru.
According to his resignation letter, dated December 1, 2025, the former Jigawa State Governor cited health reasons for his decision.
A State House correspondence on the matter, signed by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation, thanked him for his service, and is expected to notify the Senate of a successor later this week.
Reacting in a post on 𝕏, Zagazola also demanded the sacking of the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam.
