PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has cautioned property developers against constructing buildings or other structures on designated setbacks along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
Speaking during the commissioning of the first 30 kilometers of the highway in Lekki, Lagos, today, Tinubu emphasized that the Federal Government would strictly enforce setback regulations in the national interest.
“Let me warn all developers at this stage: the Federal Government will enforce the setbacks. These rules exist for a reason,” the president said.
Setbacks refer to the mandatory distance—typically between 3 to 9 meters—that buildings must maintain from roads or property boundaries.
In Lagos, these are regulated by the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), to ensure safety, privacy, ventilation, and urban order.
President Tinubu reiterated that any unauthorized construction within these zones will be demolished without compensation.
“Unauthorized developments will not be compensated when removed. The setback areas have already been gazetted and published. We will implement these rules strictly,” he stated.
The president also encouraged the public to help preserve the newly inaugurated section of the road.
“As we celebrate this achievement, we must also commit to maintaining it. The government can build roads, but it is the citizens’ duty to protect and maintain them. Motorists and residents should make the most of this infrastructure,” Tinubu added.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Works Minister Dave Umahi, and governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Hope Uzodimma (Imo).
