Former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, on Wednesday applauded President Bola Tinubu’s recent security interventions, saying the measures introduced since the declaration of a national emergency on insecurity are beginning to produce “tangible results.”
Ndume stated this in a release issued in Abuja, noting that the President’s renewed push is gradually reclaiming ungoverned spaces and strengthening collaboration among security formations.
One major step, he said, was the President’s directive to the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately deploy its trained forest guards to dislodge bandits operating from forests and difficult terrains.
According to Ndume, Tinubu’s assurance that “there will be no more hiding places for agents of evil”, coupled with ongoing recruitment into the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army, reflects a focused national strategy.
He noted that the forest guards’ involvement has already strengthened joint operations, saying their “training has gone a long way to complement the efforts of the Nigerian Army and they are happy with that too.”
Ndume, a former chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, also commended the Federal Government for recent improvements in troop welfare and morale.
He acknowledged the review of military remuneration but argued that more was needed to meet regional standards.
While salaries have been increased, he stressed that “it is still not enough, compared to other Armed forces in the sub-region.”
Naijaonpoint reports that the lawmaker pointed to ongoing upgrades in equipment and logistics, citing noticeable changes in recent months.
“There is visible improvement in the kitting of the military in terms of New Arms, uniforms, Protection Helmets, Boots, and Bulletproof Vests,” he said.
He further praised the enhanced cooperation among security agencies, describing it as very commendable.
However, Ndume insisted that more must be done to strengthen active combat operations.
“But still, the government must do more by giving priority to arms and ammunition needed at the theatre of operations. They need to procure more attack helicopters, add more Armoured Personnel Carriers and Gun trucks,” he said.
Representing Borno South Senatorial District, one of the regions most affected by insurgency, Ndume also hailed Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, for his consistent support to security agencies.
According to the senator, Zulum’s interventions have reinforced federal operations and accelerated stabilisation across the state.
“He has invested over N100bn, supporting the Nigerian Army, the Civilian JTF, Police, and other Security Agencies,” Ndume said.
“That has complemented the efforts of the Nigerian Army. That’s very commendable. I urge other governors in the North to emulate him.”
