TN Budget 2023: Free Wi-Fi, TN Tech City, and more

Tamil Nadu government in the State 2023-24 budget at the State Legislative Assembly in Chennai on March 20, 2023, Monday announced Free Wi-Fi services, TN Tech City and lots more.

Free Wi-Fi services at public places

Tamil Nadu’s Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan announced that Chennai, Avadi, Tambaram, Coimbatore, Maduri, Tiruchirappalli and Salem cities will get free Wi-Fi services at important places.

Last year, TN government launched 224 public Wi-Fi hotspots in Chennai in collaboration with ACT Fibernet.

TN Tech City

The Finance Minister announced that TN Government will set up Tamil Nadu Tech City (TNTech city) in Chennai, Coimbatore and Hosur, to promote Tamil Nadu as a global hub for IT/ ITeS and to cater to the growing office space needs.

To facilitate functioning of IT/ ITeS, GCC, FinTech and Startups, the TNTech will house a centre of excellence, innovation plaza, convention centres, recreation facilities and other necessary infrastructure, said the Finance Minister.

To promote growth of IT and ITeS sectors in Tier II cities of the State, the Government will be setting up 7 Neo-TIDEL parks across the State.

In addition to Chennai’s TIDEL Park that was opened in 2000, Neo-TIDEL parks will be opened in 3 more locations – Erode, Tirunelveli and Chengalpattu in an area of 1 lakh sq ft. These IT parks are expected to generate about 4000 jobs.

Unified Digital Infrastructure

TN government will launch Unified Digital Infrastructure to offer high quality internet services and to offer several e services at an affordable cost. For this, the government will implement a high speed optical fibre network from the State headquarters to all districts at a cost of Rs. 400 crores.

This will not only facilitate delivery of telemedicine, education, agriculture extension and other services to far-flung villages of the State but also will ensure uninterrupted internet facilities, said the minister.
