Vice President Kashim Shettima alongside some governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and party chieftains on Thursday submitted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nomination forms to the ruling party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
Those who accompanied VP Shettima include the Governors of Imo and Ogun State, Hope Uzodinma and Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Hon. James Faleke, amongst others.
Naijaonpoint reports that the NWC of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had chosen to use a direct primary as the method for electing its presidential candidate.
Speaking shortly before the submission of President Tinubu’s nomination and expression of interest form, the National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda said the numerous developmental initiatives of Tinubu’s administration informed the decision of the APC NWC to endorse the President for the second term to guarantee continuity.
Speaking after submitting the forms, Vice President Shettima assured Nigerians of better days ahead, promising that Tinubu’s administration will consolidate on the gains achieved so far.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will consult widely before deciding whether to participate in the 2027 presidential election.
Jonathan stated this on Thursday (today) in Abuja after a group of supporters marched to his office, urging him to join the presidential race.
The former President, who addressed the group, said the call had been heard, but noted that contesting for the presidency was a serious matter that required broad consultations and careful consideration.
He said, “Presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely.”
The supporters had converged on Jonathan’s office to persuade him to return to the political stage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
They appealed to him to contest the presidency, citing his experience in office and his role in democratic development on the continent.
Responding, Jonathan thanked the group for the visit and used the opportunity to speak on patriotism, peace and credible elections.
He said no nation could develop without patriotic citizens who were willing to protect its interests.
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has convicted former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, on a 12-count charge bordering on fraud and money laundering filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice James Omotosho, who delivered the judgment on Thursday, held that the anti-graft agency successfully established the former minister’s culpability beyond reasonable doubt.
Mamman served as Minister of Power under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The court found Mamman guilty of illegally diverting public funds amounting to about ₦33.8bn.
Justice Omotosho also held that the former minister made a cash payment of $655,700, equivalent to about ₦200m, for a property in Abuja without using any financial institution.
He was further convicted for criminal breach of trust linked to funds released by the Federal Government for the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power projects.
According to the court, much of the money was allegedly routed through Bureau de Change operators, who converted the funds into foreign currencies and handed them to the defendant.
Justice Omotosho said the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence against the former minister.
The Nigerian Senate on Thursday, reversed the amendments to the Senate Standing Orders.
The reversal effectively reignites competition for leadership roles in the 11th National Assembly, paving the way for individuals such as Hope Uzodimma, Adams Oshiomhole, and others to compete for Senate President in 2027.
Naijaonpoint recalls that on Tuesday, the Senate amended its standing rules to narrow eligibility for presiding and principal offices.
Under the revised rules, only senators with at least eight years of continuous service in the chamber can contest for the offices of Senate President and Deputy Senate President.
