Former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that both Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara sent planes to evacuate him and his team during the recent coup in Guinea-Bissau.
Naijaonpoint reports that in an interview with newsmen, he explained that the Ivorian plane arrived first because Côte d’Ivoire is closer and received landing approval faster due to regional ties.
He said they asked the Nigerian plane to stand down once the Ivorian aircraft was ready to transport them.
He expressed his gratitude to both leaders for their readiness to assist during the tense situation, saying that their prompt response helped ensure the safety of his delegation amid the political crisis.
He said: “I thank President Tinubu & President Ouattara. Both sent planes to evacuate us during the Guinea-Bissau coup. Côte d’Ivoire is closer & got a landing permit faster due to regional ties. We asked Nigeria to stand down since the Ivorian plane had arrived.”
The African Union (AU) has announced the suspension of Guinea-Bissau following this week’s coup in the west African country.
Naijaonpoint understands that this was disclosed to AFP on Friday by the AU Commission head.
The AU decided “to suspend Guinea-Bissau from its bodies with immediate effect”, chairman Mahamoud Ali Youssouf said.
The election observation missions to Guinea-Bissau set up by the African Union and Economic Community of West African States, and the West African Elders Forum, condemned the halt of the announcement of presidential and legislative elections and subsequent military takeover in the West African country, The PUNCH reports.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the election missions deplored what they described as “a blatant attempt to disrupt the democratic process” in Guinea-Bissau.
West African leaders gathered in an emergency virtual session on Thursday night to strongly condemn the military coup in Guinea-Bissau and demand the immediate restoration of constitutional rule, describing the developments as a serious threat to the country’s fragile democracy.
The extraordinary meeting, chaired by Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, was convened at the level of Heads of State and Government within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mediation and Security Council (MSC), to assess the growing crisis following the November 26 military takeover.
In the aftermath of the coup, ECOWAS leaders unanimously decided to suspend Guinea-Bissau from all decision-making bodies within the regional bloc until a complete and adequate constitutional order is reinstated.
The MSC reviewed a report presented by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray, which outlined the deteriorating situation following the coup. Leaders expressed alarm over disruptions to the electoral process, praising citizens for their “resilience and commitment to democracy” during the November 23 polls.
The communiqué issued after the session condemned “in the strongest terms the coup d’état perpetrated on 26 November 2025” and called for the “unconditional restoration of constitutional order without delay.”
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Friday struck out an appeal filed by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Delivering ruling, a three-member panel of the appellate court described the case as without merit and academic following his conviction for terrorism.
The court held that Kanu’s claims of breaches to his rights to human dignity, quality health care, and religion during his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) were no longer actionable after his November 20 conviction and life imprisonment sentence by a Federal High Court.
Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Boloukuromo Moses Ugo noted that the substance of the appeal became academic when Kanu’s lawyer, Maxwell Opara, confirmed at proceedings that his client was being held in Sokoto prison.
Justice Moses Ugo, in the lead judgment, held that the court could no longer grant Kanu’s request to be relocated to Kuje prison, as he had already been remanded in the facility he preferred.

This was made known in a statement on Friday by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele.

Baba-Ahmed spoke to journalists after the party’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, which officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) attended.
The senior party figure faulted reports alleging that Obi had dumped the LP, saying the claim lacked standing.
