The news that Disney are now developing a further sequel in the Toy Story saga, Toy Story 5, has drawn a surprisingly mixed reaction from fans on social media. The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger made the announcement yesterday, revealing that not only is Toy Story 5 in the works, but so are sequels to Frozen and Zootopia. But it’s Toy Story 5 that has drawn the most attention…and not a lot of it positive.
Much of the umbrage from Toy Story fans seems to stem from the story told in prior sequel Toy Story 4, with many feeling that the series should have ended with the third movie. Ending the tale of Andy and his experiences with the likes of Woody and Buzz, Toy Story 3 was released back in 2010 and was met with critical acclaim, with many feeling that it gave the franchise the perfect ending.
Of course, the Toy Story franchise remains one of the most beloved animated franchises of all time, and not everyone is feeling quite so sour about the news of a fifth outing.
The feeling overall though certainly strays more towards the negative, with fans left stumped as to why Disney want to make Toy Story 5. Aside from the obvious financial benefits, of course…
Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement yesterday during the Q1 earnings call saying, “Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia. We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”
Toy Story staple Tim Allen, who was recast with Marvel actor Chris Evans for the solo spinoff Lightyear last year, has since revealed that he will be back for Toy Story 5. “See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity,” the actor, who has played Buzz Lightyear since the first Toy Story way, way back in 1995, said via social media. “And off we go to a number 5! To infinity and beyond!”
Plot details surrounding Toy Story 5 remain a mystery at this point, though we can no doubt safely assume that the plot will find a way to bring Woody and Buzz back together following the ending of Toy Story 4. Whatever your feelings on the fourth outing, the questions remains, do we really need a Toy Story 5?
