Grief has enveloped the Ivianokpodi community in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State following the death of one of the three seminarians abducted by gunmen in July.
The Catholic Diocese of Auchi confirmed on Wednesday that seminarian Emmanuel Alabi died in captivity, while another abducted student, Joshua Aleobua, regained his freedom on November 4, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Assistant Director of Communications, Rev. Fr. Linus Imoedemhe, the Church expressed both gratitude and sorrow over the development.
“We are grateful to God for the safe release of Japhet Jesse much earlier and, most recently, Joshua Aleobua, who regained his freedom on November 4, 2025. However, with deep sorrow, we announce the passing of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who lost his life in the course of the ordeal,” the statement read.
The three seminarians, Japhet Jesse, Joshua Aleobua, and Emmanuel Alabi, were kidnapped on July 10, 2025, when gunmen invaded the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi.
Bishop Dunia Condemns Worsening Insecurity
Reacting to the tragic news, the Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Dunia, described Alabi’s death as heartbreaking and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to protect citizens.
“The loss of this young seminarian is a painful reminder of the deep insecurity in our nation. We call on the government and security agencies to rise to their responsibilities and protect lives and property,” he said.
The Bishop also warned political leaders against focusing solely on the 2027 elections, urging them instead to prioritize national security and the safety of citizens.
“Our leaders must not turn a blind eye to the worsening insecurity. Political ambitions must never take precedence over the safety and well-being of the people,” he cautioned.
The Church appealed to Catholics and Nigerians at large to pray for the repose of Emmanuel Alabi’s soul and for peace across the country.
“The Catholic Diocese of Auchi invites all the faithful and people of goodwill to join us in praying for the repose of the soul of Emmanuel Alabi, and for peace, healing, and security in our land,” the statement added.
Community Faces Fresh Wave Of Abductions
Meanwhile, five residents of Ivianokpodi were reportedly abducted last Saturday while on their way to their farms.
According to locals, the victims, three men and two women, were seized by gunmen, who have since demanded ₦50 million ransom for their release.
“One of them is my neighbour. They were kidnapped last Saturday, and as of today, the abductors are asking for ₦50 million,” a resident told Vanguard.
