Troops of the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Brigade have successfully carried out a coordinated offensive operation against Lakurawa terrorists in the Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Coordinator of the Joint Media Coordination Centre, Operation Fansan Yamma, Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, six terrorists were neutralised during an intense firefight.
“The troops recovered the following items from the operation: four AK-47 rifles, 160 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and one box of 12.7mm ammunition,” Abdullahi disclosed.
While the operation was deemed a success, it came at a significant cost. “Five gallant soldiers tragically lost their lives in the line of duty,” Abdullahi confirmed, adding that their sacrifice underscores the military’s commitment to restoring peace in the region.

The military has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies. “Public cooperation is essential in safeguarding lives and maintaining peace in our communities,” the statement read.
Naijaonpoint understands that the Lakurawa sect, believed to have infiltrated Nigeria from neighbouring Niger and Mali, has become a major security concern in the northwestern region.
Initially formed as a self-defence militia around 2016 or 2017 in Sokoto State, the group was reportedly invited by local leaders to combat banditry.
Over time, however, the sect evolved into a radical faction, imposing strict religious laws and asserting control over local communities.
The sect’s activities have expanded into Kebbi State, with violent attacks and atrocities recorded in recent months. In November 2024, the group carried out a deadly operation in Mera village, Augie Local Government Area, resulting in multiple deaths and widespread cattle rustling.
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has identified the Lakurawa sect as a terrorist group with ties to extremist elements from Mali and Niger, exacerbating the insecurity in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
