SUPER Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has debunked reports that the team’s demand for a special bonus led to their boycott of training.
The players refused to train yesterday in Rabat, 48 hours to tomorrow’s 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs clash with Gabon in the Moroccan capital, citing unpaid entitlements.
The Super Eagles are being owed allowances and match bonuses dating back to two years, and they are seeking a resolution before agreeing to take part in the play-offs.
However, a viral post on X claimed that all the backlog had been cleared by the National Sports Commission (NSC), with the Super Eagles demanding some kind of special payment for the play-offs.
..., by a content creator/journalist with over 800,000 followers, steered criticism towards the Super Eagles from enraged Nigerians, while the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) got a free pass.
“Once resolution is found we will be the first to confirm,” Troost-Ekong wrote in response to an X post by another journalist which stated that the boycott was about unresolved issues with outstanding payments.
“Any other statement/claim or eSPECIALly demands other than the rightful request written about below is FALSE.
“All we want and continue to do is focus on the big games ahead.”
Meanwhile, the NFF has not made any public response or issued an official statement to address the situation.
The training boycott is the second controversy to mar the Super Eagles’ stay in Rabat.
The team’s training base at the Rive Hotel came under public scrutiny on Monday following a viral video shared by Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi, which highlighted concerns about accommodation quality.
Although the Super Eagles media department defended the choice, citing proximity to the stadium and training facilities, checks on travel website TripAdvisor revealed that previous guests had complained about the noisy environment of the hotel, with an all-night entertainment spot nearby.
