United States President, Donald Trump, has announced fresh tariffs on the United Kingdom, Denmark and several other European countries, citing their opposition to a proposed United States takeover of Greenland.
Naijaonpoint reports that Trump made the announcement on Saturday in a post on his Truth Social account, saying a 10 per cent tariff would take effect from February 1 on goods imported into the US from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland.
According to the president, the tariffs would be increased to 25 per cent from June 1, 2026, and would remain in force until an agreement is reached for the US to purchase Greenland.
“On June 1st, 2026, the Tariff will be increased to 25 per cent. This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” Trump wrote.
Trump aimed particular criticism at Denmark, a fellow NATO member, and other European countries that have recently deployed troops to Greenland, a vast, mineral-rich territory with a population of about 57,000, located at the gateway to the Arctic.
He said, “These Countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable.
“Therefore, it is imperative that, in order to protect Global Peace and Security, strong measures be taken so that this potentially perilous situation ends quickly, and without question.”
If implemented, the proposed tariffs would represent an unprecedented escalation of tensions between Washington and its NATO allies, particularly as they involve trade penalties linked to a geopolitical dispute.
From February 1, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland would be subjected to a 10 per cent levy on all goods exported to the United States.
Since returning to office, Trump has imposed sweeping tariffs on imports from a wide range of trading partners, describing them as a response to unfair trade practices and a tool to pressure governments over issues of strategic interest to the United States.
