US President Donald Trump on Wednesday criticised what he described as the rise of “Communists” in New York politics after several candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured key victories in House primary races.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump reacted to the wins of several Mamdani-endorsed candidates, including democratic socialists Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, as well as progressive politician Brad Lander, who had previously run against Mamdani for mayor.
“America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!” Trump wrote.
The president has repeatedly labelled Mamdani a communist during recent political campaigns, describing him as a “100% Communist Lunatic” and accusing him of pursuing policies that are “destroying New York.”
Later on Wednesday, Trump again targeted the New York mayor, linking him to the primary victories.
“Mayor Mamdani pulled through 3 solid Communists, and has received loud and universal applause from the Fake News Media,” he wrote. “Congratulations Mr. Mayor!”
Trump also highlighted his own political influence, pointing to Republican successes in primary contests, including in South Carolina.
“I went 16-0 last night, helping to elect wonderful American Patriots, and the Media doesn’t say a word,” he wrote. “Over the last two years, my endorsement has netted 259 Primary WINS, and almost no losses, with Zero media attention!!!”
The victories were celebrated by the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which hailed the wins of Valdez and Avila Chevalier on social media. Following Chevalier’s victory over incumbent Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat, the organisation posted: “SOCIALISM WINS UPTOWN!”
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a leading figure in the progressive and democratic socialist movement, also welcomed the results.
In a statement posted on X, Sanders praised the “landslide victories” of Lander and Valdez.
“Together, we are creating a grassroots progressive movement that will defeat the Oligarchs,” he wrote.
Democratic socialism, which advocates greater government investment in workers and public services, differs from communism, which traditionally calls for collective ownership of property and the means of production.
