Trump Moves To Block Foreign Aid Over Gender Rules

Trump 1

President Donald Trump’s administration has announced plans to block billions of dollars in foreign aid linked to gender ideology and diversity policies.

Naijaonpoint reports that the decision was made public on Thursday, January 22, 2026, by a senior US official who explained that the government wants to stop funding programmes that promote these ideas outside the country.

The new rule is being added to the long-standing Mexico City policy, a policy first introduced during the time of former President Ronald Reagan.

That policy prevents the United States from giving money to foreign groups that carry out or support abortion services.

Under the expanded version, the government will also stop aid that supports gender ideology and diversity, equity and inclusion programmes.

The official said the goal is to protect US funds from being used for abortion, gender programmes and policies seen as unfair.

The change could affect more than 30 billion dollars in possible foreign aid, far higher than the 8 billion dollars covered under the earlier policy.

The full effect is not yet clear because the Trump administration has already cut foreign assistance in many areas.

The government has also reduced the role of the US Agency for International Development, which used to be the largest public aid provider in the world.

During his campaign and presidency, Trump has often spoken against transgender rights and reversed several policies introduced by former President Joe Biden.

His government has moved to stop transgender girls from taking part in female sports and removed the option of using an X gender marker on US passports.

Trump has also opposed diversity, equity and inclusion programmes in schools and workplaces.

He argued that such programmes unfairly treat white Americans, who form a large part of his supporters.
