US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that Iran had requested a meeting with US officials in Qatar and said the talks would take place in Doha on Tuesday, despite repeated denials from Tehran that any such discussions had been scheduled.
“IRAN HAS REQUESTED A MEETING. IT WILL TAKE PLACE TOMORROW IN DOHA!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Trump’s remarks came amid conflicting accounts over the status of US-Iran talks following their agreement to end West Asia war.
According to CNN, citing a diplomatic source familiar with the negotiations, technical teams working on the implementation of the US-Iran agreement are expected to meet in the Qatari capital in the “coming days.”
“Communications channels created to de-escalate any incidents are in place and technical talks are set to continue,” CNN quoted the source as saying.
However, Iran has publicly denied that any meetings have been arranged.
Earlier on Monday, Iranian chief negotiator Kazem Gharibabadi told reporters that no technical working group meetings had been scheduled for this week.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also rejected reports that Iranian and American technical teams would meet to discuss implementation of the agreement, creating uncertainty over whether talks in Doha will proceed as Trump indicated.
Neither Washington nor Tehran has released further details regarding the composition of the delegations or the agenda for the proposed discussions.
Qatar has played a key mediating role between the two sides throughout the recent conflict and subsequent negotiations.
