U.S. President Donald Trump has revoked former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection, CNN has reported.
According to the outlet, the directive was issued on Thursday in a letter addressed to the Secretary of Homeland Security.
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” Trump directed.
Under U.S. law, former presidents are entitled to lifetime Secret Service protection, while former vice presidents only receive such protection for six months. That coverage for Harris officially ended on July 21.
In his final hours in office, President Joe Biden had signed a series of executive actions, including pardons for members of the 2021 Capitol riot investigation committee.
CNN revealed that among those directives — previously undisclosed — was an extension of Harris’ protection for one additional year.
Trump’s move to cancel that extension comes just as Harris prepares to launch a multi-city, high-profile book tour tied to the release of 107 Days, her memoir recounting her short presidential campaign. The book is scheduled for release on September 23.
Harris, who has largely stayed out of the public spotlight since leaving office, is expected to draw significant attention during her tour.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, told CNN.
Security analysts have noted that Harris faced elevated risks due to her historic role as the first woman and the first Black woman to serve as vice president and later seek the presidency.
Earlier this year, Trump also revoked Joe Biden’s security clearance and ended his access to intelligence briefings, describing the move as retaliation for the way he was treated following the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
