Mato member Turkey would consider taking its relations with the China and Russialed security bloc, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, to a higher level, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday.
Turkey is considering pursuing full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday, indicating Ankara’s interest in taking its engagement with the China- and Russia-led security bloc to a higher level.
Erdogan, however, stressed that any move towards full membership of the SCO would not mean Turkey was breaking away from its existing alliances or distancing itself from the West.
“Turkey’s prospect of (full) membership to the organisation does not imply a breakaway from any other bloc or from the West,” Erdogan said, according to a transcript of remarks he made to journalists on his return flight from Kyrgyzstan.
The Turkish president attended the SCO summit in Bishkek on Tuesday. Turkey is currently a dialogue partner of the organisation.
