Two persons have been confirmed dead, while 19 others sustained injuries in a road accident along the Lokoja–Okene highway on Tuesday.

The Sector Commander of the Kogi State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Tenimu Etuku, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Lokoja.

Etuku said that four of the 19 survivors sustained varying degrees of injuries, ranging from bruises to fractures, and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

He attributed the lone accident to excessive speeding.

According to him, “From the manifest, the ill-fated bus reportedly left Kano on Monday evening, heading to Auchi/Benin before the unfortunate incident that happened at 9:40 am on Tuesday. The cause of the lone accident was excessive speeding.

“The FRSC personnel, who carried out the rescue, have deposited the two corpses in the morgue of the Kogi Specialist Hospital in Lokoja.”

The sector commander urged motorists to exercise caution on the highways and strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations, especially during the Yuletide season.

“Motorists or road users must be careful and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to avoid such accidents and wastage of precious lives. By so doing, they will greatly contribute to reducing the number of accidents and fatalities across the country,” he stated.

Meanwhile, a separate road crash was earlier reported along the Isara-Remo axis of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency disclosed that the accident occurred at about 3 a.m.
