Not less than two serving opposition governors are preparing to officially align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State are expected to be formally received into the APC in separate ceremonies scheduled for this week.
Their planned defections signal a growing consolidation of political power by the ruling party across key states.
In Kano State, Governor Abba Yusuf is set to complete his return to the APC following his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). His decision comes after a mass exit of top political office holders from the NNPP in the state.
The governor did not leave alone. He was joined by 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen.
The move has effectively weakened the NNPP structure in Kano and strengthened the APC’s influence in the state.
According to a statement released by his spokesperson, Bature Tofa, the governor’s decision was guided by his political history and his belief that the APC offers a more stable platform for governance.
The statement recalled that Yusuf had earlier joined the APC in 2014 and contested for the Kano Central senatorial seat on the party’s platform.
He later stepped aside for Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former governor of the state. This, the spokesperson said, showed that Yusuf has longstanding political roots within the APC family.
Yusuf is said to be convinced that returning to the APC will improve cooperation between Kano State and the federal government. Areas of focus include security, infrastructure projects and public service delivery.
Meanwhile, Plateau State is preparing for a high-profile political event as Governor Caleb Mutfwang is set to be formally received into the APC on Tuesday in Jos.
President Bola Tinubu, APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, governors, ministers and other senior party leaders are expected to attend the ceremony.
The event is being described by party officials as a landmark moment in Plateau politics.
In a statement issued in Jos, the Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, Sir Joseph Ari, said the state capital would become the centre of national political attention on the day of the reception.
He noted that preparations had been completed for what he called an “earth-shaking reception” in honour of Governor Mutfwang.
“To this end, all is now set for the formal reception of Governor Caleb Mutfwang into the All Progressives Congress,” the statement said.
Party officials added that the planned ceremony has already triggered heightened political activity and excitement across Plateau State.
The entry of Governor Mutfwang into the APC is seen as a major realignment that could alter the balance of power in the North-Central region.
Nevertheless, the dual defections of Yusuf and Mutfwang will further boost the APC’s nationwide reach as preparations quietly begin for the 2027 elections.
