U.S to ban the export of 4G, Wi-Fi and AI chips to Huawei
The U.S is stepping up its trade ban against Huawei according to Reuters.
Three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that the Biden administration has halted approving licenses for U.S companies to export many items to Huawei. One source claims the Biden administration is working on a new policy to ban the export of “items below the 5G level”, which includes 4G, Wi-Fi 6/7, AI, and high-performance computing and cloud chips.
The trade ban on Huawei started in 2019 after U.S companies are forbidden to work with Chinese equipment providers. Google had to suspend Huawei’s access to Android apps, OS and security updates. In May 2020, the U.S blocked Huawei’s acceess to overseas chip manufacturers. Few months later, the U.S enforced tightr chipset restrictions on the Chinese company. The trade ban was extended in September 2020 to China’s biggest chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC).
It remains to be seen how Huawei will survive the latest trade restrictions as it loses access to 4G chips for its mobile phones. Its PC business is likely to be affected as well.
