The government of the United Arab Emirates has pledged full support and partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
Naijaonpoint reports that the assurance was made during a courtesy visit by the UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, Salem Saeed Musabbeh Alshamsi, to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
The envoy praised the agency’s leadership under Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) for the progress made in curbing drug-related crimes and promised deeper cooperation between both countries.
Alshamsi expressed his government’s readiness to formalize the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding with the NDLEA.
He said the agreement would cover intelligence sharing, exchange of information on drug networks, and stronger coordination between law enforcement agencies of both nations.
The envoy also invited Marwa to visit the UAE for further discussions with his counterpart and the Dubai Police leadership.
In response, Marwa expressed gratitude to the UAE government for the show of confidence and partnership, saying that international cooperation remains vital in tackling the global drug problem.
He praised the growing relationship between Nigeria and the UAE, especially in trade and mutual development, which he said aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Marwa also disclosed that in the last four years, NDLEA operatives intercepted over 302 kilograms of various illicit drugs destined for the UAE through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and some courier companies.
He reaffirmed NDLEA’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the UAE and other global partners in the joint effort to eliminate drug trafficking and abuse.
