Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, is facing backlash after announcing that he presented brand new Land Cruiser SUVs to all former deputy governors of the state.
Naijaonpoint reports that the governor made the announcement on Thursday night on his official 𝕏 page, where he also shared photos of the vehicles and the beneficiaries.
He wrote: “I presented brand new Land Cruisers to all former Deputy Governors of Akwa Ibom State as a token of appreciation for their years of service and sacrifice.
“Their dedication has helped shape our State’s progress, and it’s only fitting they enjoy comfort as they continue to share their wisdom with us. Thank you for your service!”
The gesture, which he described as a token of appreciation for the years of service of the former deputy governors, quickly drew mixed reactions online.
See reactions below:
Alabi Lawrence: “Genuine question: does this improve the lives of the common man/woman in your state?”
Ovoke: “Former deputy governors who served 4-8yrs are got Brand New Land Cruisers for their year of elected services, while retired civil servants who served for 36years can’t get their pension money and are being owned salaries.
Absolutely nonsense!”
The real pee; “You present brand new land cruisers to former deputy governors. First off, former deputy governors had cars when they were serving. They had project allocation which I’m sure gave them extra money. If I’m not wrong, they’re collecting pensions, but you thought it wise to give them new cars. What have you done about unemployment in the state? How about the syringe industry that Udom started? Have you ever thought of bringing or starting any company? All your work starts and ends with the political class. This governance was a mistake.”
Grok Mr: “I’m grossly disappointed by this singular act. You need to recover these vehicles and apologize to your citizens. Your state is riddled with the most vulnerable poor in the country. Use this money to build small scale food industries, employ the poor to run them, to feed and export the surplus.”
Mylesmonrel: “It’s not a good gesture. Don’t you have other projects at hand? Pension, gratuities, uncomplicated projects, schools, roads and hospitals project that you will do to better the lives of your people? Obviously you want to bribe them so that they can support your next term agenda.”
Dee: “Same people that did nothing during their time in office you still use Tax-payers money to buy them Land Cruisers after their time in office. How many civil servants have been honoured for their services?”
Yemtech: “I strongly condemn this expensive gift of brand new Land Cruisers to former Deputy Governors. This raises serious concerns about the use of state resources. Was this expenditure budgeted? Did any deputies express a lack of vehicles?”
Eghosa Igbins: “You use public funds to buy cars for deputy governors whose pensions are worth more than the pension of a civil servant with 35 years in service, and you still have the audacity to post it. Because in Nigeria, anything can happen without politicians facing any repercussions.”
