A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) interim leadership aligned with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has described the media outing of Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as an unsolicited display of political rascality, moral emptiness, crass opportunism, and post-defeat trauma.
Naijaonpoint reports that Wike had, during the media parley, threatened to halt the primaries or the convention that will produce its presidential candidate.
Wike also warned that any bank that allows the Turaki-led PDP to open an account to sell nomination forms for the 2027 election will be in trouble.
According to him, any attempt by the Turaki faction to sell form to any aspirant for the 2027 polls will amount to duping Nigerians.
Wike boasted that any day Turaki opens a bank account for the PDP under the current circumstances, he will be stripped of his Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) status.
In response, the National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Ini Ememobong, in a statement on Wednesday, brushed aside Wike’s threats, saying the party’s primaries and national convention would proceed as scheduled.
Makinde’s bloc said it would ordinarily have ignored the remarks, but chose to address Nigerians directly, framing its intervention as an apology for previously elevating Wike to public office.
The statement read, “Nigerians today witnessed what can only be described as an unsolicited display of political rascality, moral emptiness, crass opportunism, and post-defeat trauma by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
“The Minister cast aside restraint and maligned several distinguished Nigerians with what can best be described as ‘sound and fury, signifying nothing.
“This statement is therefore not a reply to his tirade, which we consider his political swan song and the last kicks of a dying horse, but an apology to Nigerians for having, at any point, enabled a public figure whose conduct, utterances and reasoning have become a national embarrassment with international consequences.
“We urge those defamed in his remarks to seek legal redress. No individual is, or should be, above the law.”
While claiming the legitimate leadership of the PDP, Makinde’s bloc stressed that Wike can never become the National leader of the opposition party.
The statement added, “As the legitimate leadership of our party, we also express sympathy for the Minister over the apparent realisation that he will neither become, nor can he become, the National Leader of the party, an office that does not exist in our constitution.
“Nigerians can be assured that no amount of threats will suppress the truth. While falsehood may travel faster, it does not diminish the force or eventual triumph of the truth.”
