UPDATE: Mitch McConnell To Require Rehab After Suffering More Injuries Than Previously Reported

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is headed to a physical rehabilitation program stemming from a fall he took late last week at a private dinner gathering.

A spokesperson for the senator confirmed McConnell recently left the George Washington University hospital for the rehab facility on Monday, according to the Western Journal.

The Republican’s injuries were greater than originally reported following a tripping incident on stairs of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Washington, D.C. last Wednesday. He is recovering from a concussion and fractured ribs at the inpatient treatment center and is not expected to return to the Senate floor this week, his aide confirmed to ABC News.

News of the incident has gripped the nation’s capital for nearly a week as lawmakers and lobbyists alike contemplate how pushback on the Biden agenda by Senate Republicans may be stymied without their longtime leader. McConnell has served in the Senate since 1984 and is the longest-serving party leader in the body’s 234 year history.

Despite best wishes in his recovery from President Joe Biden, Senator McConnell’s scrape became predictability partisan fodder on social media with conservatives and progressives releasing dueling memes and mentions about his tumble.

The 81-year-old previously fell outside his Louisville home in 2019, fracturing his shoulder and undergoing surgery. His malady is the latest in a string of unfortunate events for U.S. senators in recent years. The 89-year-old Senator Diane Feinstein of California is currently away from the Senate floor while recovering from shingles. Newly elected Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) has stepped back from his official duties to seek help for clinical depression. McConnell’s one-time rival, former Democrat Senate Leader Harry Reid, was partially blinded in 2015 by an exercise resistance band shortly before announcing he would not seek reelection. Reid passed away in 2021 at the age of 82.
