The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, Wednesday, defected to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Obi announced his defection during a conference in Enugu. He vowed to resist election rigging with his new party during the 2027 general elections.
According to him, “We will resist rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027. I urge opposition leaders to come together as a family under the leadership of David Mark to rescue Nigeria.”
He condemned what he called the impunity with which beneficiaries of electoral fraud celebrate their victories.
In his words, “We have all watched those who benefitted from our democracy now becoming accessories of our democracy either through coercion or gangsterism to the opposition.
“We can’t allow this to happen again. We will resist it. We now see people celebrating electoral fraud publicly. We are saying that those planning to rig elections in Nigeria come 2027 will be resisted by every means lawful and legitimate.”
He said his defection was strategic, marking the end of 2025.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey. We still have a one-year window for everyone to go and verify the schools they attended. We do not want to return to court again only to be told it is a pre-election matter. The pre-election process should start now.”
The National Chairman of ADC, David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal; Emeka Ihedioha, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives; Senator Ben Obi, Senator Victor Umeh, Senator Tony Nwoye, Senator Gilbert Nnaji, Senator Enyinnya Abaribe, Senator Sam Egwu, Senator and Senator Onyema Ugochukwu were among the people at the event.
