The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Prof. Chituru Orluwene, successfully mediated and resolved the long-standing dispute concerning the use and ownership of the commercial vehicle park at Alakahia.
During the peace meeting, Prof. Orluwene commended the two contending groups for honouring the invitation of hospital management and for constructively presenting their concerns. He reiterated the need for mutual understanding and cooperation, stressing that the prevailing status quo must be maintained in the interest of peace, order, and institutional harmony. Prof Orluwene further emphasized the importance of inclusivity, particularly the recognition and accommodation of the families and representatives of the original landowners.
Speaking on behalf of one faction, Chief Chuku Markson pledged his group’s commitment to sustaining peace and respecting the resolutions reached. Similarly, the other group, led by Mr. Azubuike Ernest, assured hospital management of their full cooperation and support toward the successful implementation of the Prof. Orluwene’s peace initiative.
The meeting, which was also attended by the Director of Administration, Ms. Erebi Wadiri, and the CMD’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Mathew Iyeanyi, marks a significant achievement in restoring cordial relations among the parties. The resolution effectively brings to an end a prolonged period of tension that had adversely impacted operations around the park and, by extension, the public image of the hospital.
UPTH management reiterates its commitment to proactive conflict resolution, stakeholder engagement, and administrative fairness as critical pillars for ensuring peace, security, and uninterrupted healthcare service delivery.
