United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has thrown his weight behind Washington’s planned visa restriction on Nigerians linked to the backing of terrorism, calling it a “good first step” toward accountability.
The lawmaker, representing West Virginia’s Second District, reacted on his official 𝕏 page on Wednesday, just hours after U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, unveiled the Trump administration’s new visa policy aimed at curbing religious persecution and terrorism support.
Rubio had earlier announced that the U.S. Department of State, acting on the directive of President Donald Trump, would now impose visa restrictions on individuals or governments tied to violations of religious freedom, particularly attacks on Christians in Nigeria.
Rubio, in the wireless statement, said, “The United States is taking decisive action in response to the atrocities and violence against Christians in Nigeria and around the world. The state department will restrict U.S. visas for those who knowingly direct, authorize, fund, support, or carry out violations of religious freedom. This visa policy applies to Nigeria and other governments or individuals that persecute people for their religious beliefs.”
Welcoming the policy, Moore said that the decision sets the stage for long-awaited consequences for violent actors and their backroom supporters.
In his post, he stated, “This is a good first step.”
He added that the visa action signals the beginning of the end for impunity: “Accountability is coming to those who perpetrate or turn a blind eye to the persecution of our brothers and sisters in Christ.”
