The United States House Appropriations Committee has announced a joint congressional briefing for Tuesday, with a focus on the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
A notice shared on Tuesday by Congressman Riley Moore confirmed that Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee and Chairman of the National Security Subcommittee, Mario Díaz‑Balart, will preside over the session in Washington.
Committee officials said lawmakers from the Foreign Affairs and Financial Services panels, alongside key Appropriators, will attend the closed-briefing session billed for 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
Officials of the committee disclosed that representatives from the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, as well as independent security and faith-based experts, will present evidence during the session.
Briefing organisers noted that testimony from the roundtable will form the backbone of a comprehensive document being prepared for the White House.
The roundtable will collect testimony for a comprehensive report “directed by President Trump on the massacre of Nigerian Christians and the steps Congress can take to support the White House’s efforts to protect vulnerable faith communities worldwide.”
Meanwhile, the briefing is being held at a time when the governments of Nigeria and the United States are ramping up security cooperation, following high-level talks held in Washington.
