Victor Osimhen: Chelsea line up Aston Villa star as backup plan for Super Eagles striker

Chelsea have made contact with Aston Villa over a possible move for Ollie Watkins, should their pursuit of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen fall through, Footynaija.com understands.

The Blues remain keen on signing a proven centre-forward this summer and view Osimhen as their primary target.

However, concerns remain over the Nigeria international’s high wage demands — the same issue that saw negotiations collapse last August — forcing the club to explore alternative options.

One of those alternatives is Villa and England striker Watkins, according to FootballTransfers.

Unai Emery’s side have reportedly placed a €70m (£60m) valuation on the 29-year-old, who is contracted until 2028.

Chelsea are understood to be willing to meet that figure, even though Watkins doesn’t fit the typical age profile of a BlueCo signing.

Watkins has long been admired across the Premier League. Arsenal were interested in January but failed to agree a fee, while Manchester United have explored a potential swap involving Marcus Rashford.

Despite growing Saudi Pro League interest — with Al-Hilal reportedly eyeing Osimhen and Napoli offering a possible discount for a June deal — the 25-year-old still favours a move to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Nigeria legend John Obi Mikel said: “He wants to play for Chelsea. I know where we stopped in terms of the contract. It’s an easy fix.”

Chelsea are working to secure Osimhen, but have Watkins firmly on their radar should talks stall once more.
