The 2023 Africa Footballer of the Year award winner has been named the Super Eagles’ new assistant captain and first-choice penalty taker.
The Galatasaray forward steps into the role following the international retirement of William Troost-Ekong. Troost-Ekong’s departure has triggered a recalibration of authority within the squad just before Nigeria begin their AFCON campaign.
Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s second-highest goalscorer of all time, will deputise for newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi, who was officially confirmed as the Super Eagles’ leader earlier this week. Paris FC winger Moses Simon has also been retained as one of the assistant captains.
The decision reveals Osimhen’s growing influence within the national team, both on and off the pitch, as Nigeria prepare for a tournament that carries heightened expectations following recent disappointments.

Victor Osimhen: Leadership reset after Troost-Ekong exit
Troost-Ekong, who captained Nigeria to the final of the 2023 AFCON and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, stepped away from international football earlier this month. He had previously served as the team’s penalty taker and central leadership figure.
In his absence, Ndidi has been elevated to captain, while Osimhen’s promotion reflects the striker’s standing as the emotional heartbeat of the team.
At 26, Osimhen has already scored more goals for Nigeria than all but one player in history, trailing only the late Rashidi Yekini by six goals. His relentless work rate, visible passion for the national shirt and consistency at the highest level have made him a natural leader within the squad.
Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon remain among the most senior figures in the team, both already into a decade of international service. Iwobi is currently Nigeria’s most capped player, with Simon close behind.
Super Eagles: Bassey backs Fredrick return as focus turns to Tanzania
Meanwhile, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has expressed optimism over the recovery of centre-back Benjamin Fredrick, whose AFCON hopes were dashed by a knee injury sustained in training with Belgian club FCV Dender EH.
Speaking during a pre-match media session, Bassey acknowledged the setback but remained confident in Fredrick’s long-term future with the national team.
“I haven’t spoken to him, but it would be amazing for him to showcase his talent on this stage,” Bassey said. “I wish him a speedy recovery and I hope he will be back with us next year.”
Bassey also addressed the pressure surrounding the team following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the squad remains forward-looking.
“There will always be pressure on Nigeria,” he said. “From ourselves, from the country. But we have to focus on what we need to do and remain positive.”
Nigeria begin their AFCON 2025 campaign on Tuesday evening against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium, with head coach Eric Chelle hoping the leadership changes will translate into clarity, cohesion and a strong opening performance.
