Semenya, who has lived through a wave of prejudice and stigma throughout her life, bravely opposed the track federation’s mandate to take testosterone-suppressing drugs.
Semenya has a congenital condition in which people have atypical sex chromosomes, and in past court documents she has confirmed her DSD to be of the 46 XY breed, which means she has female traits and male chromosomes.

The condition led to elevated levels of testosterone in the body and led the athletics governing body to issue a ruling in 2018, following her meteoric rise to fame, banning women with similar conditions from competing in international competitions.
In the end, Semenya fought a protracted battle with the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) over rules that banned athletes with high testosterone levels from competing in the 400, 800 or 1500 meters.
The rule prevents Semenya from participating in the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Semenya shares her story in an interview with HBO’s Real Sports
