The Senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District, Kelvin Chukwu, has been caught on camera physically assaulting one of his constituents during a football competition organised by him.
SaharaReporters obtained video footage showing the lawmaker engaging in a physical altercation with the constituent during the tournament’s final match, held on Saturday, January 3, 2026. The competition had commenced in December 2025.
The assault reportedly occurred in the presence of armed security operatives attached to the senator, who looked on as the incident unfolded.
Another video obtained by SaharaReporters also showed one of the senator’s security details physically assaulting the same constituent.
In one of the clips, Senator Chukwu, who appeared visibly angry, was seen in a heated exchange with the constituent before an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps stepped in and physically attacked the man.
Moments later, the senator was seen chasing the constituent outside the football pitch and slapping him.
Despite being assaulted by the senator and his security aides, the constituent was subsequently arrested and detained.
A source who witnessed the incident said, “Senator Kelvin Chukwu slapped one of the players in his village Christmas competition in Amurri after a little disagreement.
“For years, he has not done anything for the community. He came this December to organise a football competition because elections are close.”
Senator Chukwu recently defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Labour Party had earlier handed him its senatorial ticket following the assassination of his elder brother, Oyibo Chukwu, on February 22, 2023.
After the killing, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rescheduled the Enugu East senatorial election to March 18, 2023, to allow the party nominate a fresh candidate.
Chukwu won the party’s primary with 223 votes, while his three rivals scored zero votes.
In the general election, he polled 69,136 votes to defeat the then incumbent senator and former Enugu State governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, who garnered 48,701 votes.
