Local vigilantes struck hard against armed criminals in Zamfara State over the weekend, with fifteen bandits getting killed in a surprise attack near Gamo Forest in Gummi Local Government Area.
The operation began early Sunday after residents and local networks tipped off the volunteer fighters about the group’s movements. Vigilantes moved into the forest area under cover of darkness and set up an ambush.
A fierce exchange of fire followed. Fifteen of the bandits were killed on the spot. Several more suffered wounds and fled into the surrounding bush.
Two vigilante members also lost their lives while defending their communities.
Security analyst Bakatsine shared details of the clash on X on Monday. He described the action as a calculated response to the bandits’ presence in the area.
“Local fighters showed real courage by taking the fight to these groups,” Bakatsine said. “They paid a heavy price, but they disrupted a dangerous movement before it could strike again.”
He praised the volunteers for acting on solid information and standing firm against heavily armed criminals.
Banditry continues to trouble parts of Zamfara and neighbouring states. Communities have increasingly turned to local defence groups when formal security forces are stretched thin.
The latest clash highlights both the risks these volunteers face and their growing role in pushing back against violent gangs operating in forested zones.
