Washington sends two warships into the Taiwan Strait

The US Navy sent two warships through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, the first such announced transit since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan this month, at a time when tensions have generated a lot of activity in that sea lane. The US ships Antietam and Chancelorsville are making a routine transit, the US 7th Fleet reported. The ships “transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any State with coasts,” it was indicated.

China held many military exercises in the strait in retaliation against Taiwan after Pelosi visited the self-governing island despite threats from Beijing not to.

The Chinese government has sent many warships through the Taiwan Strait and around the island since Pelosi’s visit, and has also sent warplanes and fired long-range missiles.
