The Coast Guard rescued two people and a cat from a sailboat in Freeport

Freeport, Texas (KTRK) – Authorities said the U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people and a cat aboard a disabled sailboat Monday near Freeport.

At about 9:47 a.m. Monday, the Coast Guard Command Center in the Houston-Galveston area got a call from the operator of a 38-foot schooner saying their vessel was out of order and had pulled anchor.

Video from the rescue shows the launch of the 45-foot response boat and the crew. One by one, two people and their cat were safely lifted from the water and then taken to the Coast Guard base.

There were no reports of injuries.

“Having reliable communication equipment on board your boat such as VHF-FM marine radio is absolutely essential,” Ofc. Julian Key, operations unit controller, said. “This boat operator’s use of marine radio enabled us to quickly dispatch rescue crews to their position and bring them safely back to shore.”
