Nollywood actress, Ibironke Ojo-Anthony, better known as Ronke Oshodi-Oke, has lauded YouTube for resolving long-standing marketing and royalty challenges in Nollywood.
Naijaonpoint reports that the thespian, in a recent interview on the ‘Nollywood on Radio’ podcast, admitted that filmmakers struggled to receive royalties after movie production.
She highlighted how the shift to producing movies for YouTube has fundamentally changed the industry by empowering actors and content creators to control the entire production chain and, crucially, to retain all associated income.
She said, “Before, it used be very difficult before to get royalties when you produce a movie. We have been managing and trying..
“Thank God now that you have your own YouTube. Now you are your own marketer, you are your own producer, you are your own executive producer, you do everything on your own.
“You are not owing anybody, nobody is owing you anything. That is why everyone is having their own YouTube. You do not owe nobody explanation.”
In other news, actress Mary Njoku has raised concerns over how people use social media.
The mother of three, in a post on her Instagram page, questioned why pain and tragedy are often turned into entertainment.
She stressed that while social platforms have been powerful tools in other parts of the world for activism, justice, and community building, the same cannot be said for Nigeria.
According to her, many people are now more focused on clout, quick fame, and virality than on showing empathy.
Njoku frowned at how human suffering is often repackaged as skits and how tragedies are turned into trending videos.
She said she sometimes avoids social media because it has become filled with noise, where struggles and pain are treated as content instead of being taken seriously.
