The African Democratic Congress (ADC) convention in Abuja was thrown into discomfort on Tuesday after air conditioning systems at the venue stopped working, leaving delegates struggling with heat.
Naijaonpoint reports that the event is taking place at the Rainbow Event Centre after the party failed to secure its initial preferred locations. Earlier, the ADC disclosed that it could not gain access to Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, forcing a last-minute change of venue.
The situation became more tense when the party’s publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, raised concerns that there were attempts to disrupt the booking at the new location.
Despite the challenges, former Kogi senator Dino Melaye insisted that the convention would go on as planned. He made it clear that the party would not back down, even with the poor conditions at the venue.
He explained that although the party had completed payment and agreements for the facility, they were still facing difficulties using some of the equipment, including the central cooling system. Efforts were ongoing to fix the problem and restore comfort inside the hall.
Melaye also disclosed that alternative measures, such as bringing in electric fans, were being arranged to ease the heat while the programme continued.
According to him, the party remained determined to hold the gathering regardless of the obstacles, insisting that nothing would stop the convention from taking place that day.
Melaye said: “We are using this place by force. After paying for this place, signing contractual agreements, they refused to let us use it. We don’t know where to turn on the central air conditioners.
“But we are working on getting the ACs on. Even if it is in a motor park, the convention will hold today. They don’t want it to hold, but by the grace of God, the convention will hold today.”
