Former Super Eagles star Kanu Nwankwo has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to appoint Augustine Eguavoen as the permanent Super Eagles coach, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles have been without a permanent coach since Finidi George was sacked in June following a poor run of results. Since then, Eguavoen has been serving as an interim coach. He has also had to take charge of the home-based team.

With Eguavoen as coach, Nigeria have not lost any game. They have won three and drawn just one.

However, despite his impressive run of games, the NFF have not give Eguavoen the job permanently as it seems that they are are only keen on appointing a foreign coach.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal star Kanu, who featured prominently for Nigeria with 87 senior caps, is unhappy with the situation. This is as he believes Eguavoen should have been handed a permanent contract already.

“If I were the NFF president, I’d have given him the job by now,” Eguavoen told Brila FM, per OgaNla media.

“What are they waiting for? Are we waiting for him to lose two matches before we say he should go? This is overdue; they have to act.

“They brought someone in, he’s doing well, winning matches—what else are you looking for When coaches are doing well, you keep them.

“If they’re still looking for the ‘right one,’ when is that going to come. We don’t have time, qualifications here and there.”

With Eguavoen in charge of the Super Eagles, they have qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His next task with the team will be rescuing a 2026 World Cup ticket.1
