A 1994 intermission show at the Eurovision Song Contest in Ireland made Flatley a household name. “Riverdance,” a seven-minute show, received widespread acclaim, leading Flatley to produce the full-length version. He became one of the world’s highest-paid entertainers when he started Lord of the Dance after being fired over creative differences in 1995. He performed at the Academy Awards in 1997. The Irish dancer continued touring with different versions of his shows, eventually appearing on Dancing With the Stars in 2007 and serving as a guest judge in 2008.

He had previously suffered from skin cancer after being diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2003, after being spotted on MTV. His previous fundraising efforts have supported cancer charities. During his treatment for cancer, he told the Irish Independent: It was purely by chance that it was discovered. It can be a scary place, I had never even noticed it. His parents had emigrated to the US in 1947 from Ireland, where he was born in Chicago. A few years later, he joined the Irish folk group The Chieftains and took Irish dance lessons in the city. A spy thriller that was released in cinemas last year, Blackbird, was written, directed, financed, and starred by him since he retired.
