The Anglican Bishop of the Oji River Diocese, Ikechukwu Egbonu, has shared details of his visit to Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Prison, where the IPOB leader is serving a life sentence.
Naijaonpoint reports that in an interview with Signature TV, the bishop said he travelled to Sokoto for a church event and decided to stop by the prison to comfort Kanu, but the meeting took a different turn.
He explained that he expected to meet someone weighed down by long months in detention, but instead, he said Kanu appeared calm, focused and steady, showing no sign of fear or agitation.
According to Egbonu, Kanu urged him not to worry and asked that people at home should remain peaceful.
He expressed that his stand has not changed and maintained that he does not support violence.
The bishop added that Kanu stressed that any move towards violence could cause the international community to see his followers in the wrong way.
Egbonu said he went to the prison hoping to offer comfort but left feeling encouraged, describing Kanu as strong and unwavering despite his situation.
Egbonu stated, “I found him exceptionally strong. I went there to console him, but it was he who ended up encouraging me. He urged us not to worry and to advise our people to remain peaceful and avoid violence. He asserted that he is not involved in harming others, that his mission is not to lead our people to violence, and he warned that resorting to violence would risk being labelled as terrorists by the international community. In fact, it was he who was uplifting me.”
