Nigerian Singer D’Banj has spoken on the split of Mo’Hits Records, saying the decision to end the partnership came entirely from Don Jazzy.
Naijaonpoint reports that breakup, which shocked fans and the music industry, was not D’Banj’s choice.
In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye, D’Banj explained that Don Jazzy made the call to go separate ways, and this decision allowed them to maintain a good relationship afterward.
Following the split, Don Jazzy gave D’Banj complete ownership of his music catalog, including unreleased tracks.
This ensured that D’Banj could continue his career without interruptions and keep control over his creative work.
The final major hit from their collaboration, Oliver Twist, marked the end of their time as partners.
D’Banj said that the song was a way to leave a lasting impact on the global music scene before moving on.
He said: “It didn’t come from me, the idea to go our separate ways didn’t come from me, it came from Don Jazzy 100%. That’s why we’re still cool, and that’s why he gave me 100 percent of my catalog, even 10 other songs I haven’t released. It’s not about the record label for me, it’s about the movement and future.
“For me personally, even though it was a journey and he had his opinions, I knew that we needed to cement that global movement, and I’m glad that, in the end, God still made it happen for us.”
Mo’Hits Records, co-founded by D’Banj and Don Jazzy, played a major role in shaping Nigerian music.
The label produced several hit songs and helped launch the careers of artistes like Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince.
After leaving Mo’Hits, Don Jazzy established Mavin Records, where he nurtured new talents such as Tiwa Savage, Rema, and Ayra Starr, continuing his influence in the Nigerian music industry.
