LAGOS – Sports media professional, Olaleye Idowu, says his training in project management has shaped the way he approaches sports journalism, content production and football development. Idowu, who holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Estate Management and a Master’s degree in Project Management, during a chat with Saturday INDEPENDENT explained that the skills acquired from his academic background have complemented his career in sports media.
“My career has been shaped by my passion for both professional development and sports. While studying Estate Management, I developed strong analytical, negotiation and communication skills that are valuable in many industries,” he said.
“Every interview, content series or football event involves planning, scheduling, stakeholder management, budgeting, risk assessment and evaluation.
“When producing sports content, I approach it like a project by defining objectives, identifying the target audience, planning timelines, coordinating contributors and ensuring quality delivery.”
Idowu began his broadcasting career in 2011 as a student presenter at FUTA Radio 93.1FM before undergoing professional training at the National Broadcast Academy and Gidi Creative Academy.
He has since worked with platforms including SportlineNG, Opera News, Galaxy TV, Hotsports, Urban Express and Naija 101.1FM UK. While speaking on the changing demands of sports journalism, he said media professionals must adapt their storytelling to the platform while maintaining accuracy and credibility.
“Sports journalism should not only report results but also tell stories that inspire young athletes, promote accountability within sports administration and contribute to the development of Nigerian sports,” he said.
“In scouting, data complements traditional observation by helping clubs identify player performance trends, strengths and areas for development more objectively.”
