Nollywood actor and filmmaker Daniel Etim-Effiong has revealed that his deep Christian faith guides his approach to on-screen intimacy, disclosing that he prays before shooting every romantic scene.
Etim-Effiong, who recently made his directorial debut with The Herd, shared during an interview on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds that seeking divine guidance is integral to his work, which he views as a form of worship.
“I get all my inspiration from God,” the actor said. “I go on my knees and pray before I go to set and kiss.”
The actor, who is known for his romantic roles, explained that his faith helps him remain grounded despite the pressures and “temptations” of the profession.
Etim-Effiong has previously faced criticism, particularly after a viral kissing scene with actress Bolaji Ogunmola in the movie Summer Rain. He maintained that his primary focus is on storytelling, not stirring up controversy.
While acknowledging that his roles often require kissing, he challenged Nollywood producers to explore diverse expressions of love on screen.
“The fact that I play a lot of romantic roles means I get to have kissing scenes sometimes. But the question should go to the producers, why are they expressing affection only one way? There are other ways to show intimacy,” he stated.
He further noted that explicit romantic scenes are often included due to audience demand. “The average Nollywood script says, ‘kiss passionately,’ because that’s what sells. But I believe there are braver ways to explore affection on screen,” he added.
The 37-year-old star shared that his transition from a successful career in engineering to acting was a deliberate choice driven by purpose and faith.
“My family is my garden, then my work,” he explained. “Acting feels like a calling to me, a way to worship through storytelling.”
Despite the constant scrutiny of his career, Etim-Effiong stressed that his core principles remain faith, focus, and family.
“When you’re a focused person, you don’t let naysayers get to you,” he concluded. “You just do your job and move with purpose.”
