The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged residents of Osun State to vote peacefully in Saturday’s governorship election, saying the state needs stronger ties with the Federal Government to accelerate development.
Akpabio, who represented President Bola Tinubu at the All Progressives Congress campaign rally in Osogbo, assured voters that adequate security arrangements had been made to protect them and ensure a credible electoral process.
He urged eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and exercise their franchise without fear, while also asking them to consider the APC candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO.
The Senate President said voters were free to support candidates of their choice but argued that electing Oyebamiji would provide an opportunity for Osun to establish closer cooperation with the Federal Government.
“Feel very free to cast your votes for the candidate of your choice. My advice, however, is that you choose wisely because there is a need to link Osun State to the centre,” Akpabio said.
He also dismissed concerns over possible intimidation or violence at polling units, insisting that security personnel had been deployed to safeguard voters and maintain order throughout the election.
Akpabio said reports suggesting that voters could be attacked or prevented from voting were largely circulating on social media, stressing that such conduct would not be permitted at polling centres.
The Senate President expressed confidence in the APC’s prospects, citing the turnout at the rally and the support of prominent political figures as indications of the party’s growing acceptance in the state.
Among those present at the rally were former Osun State Governor and former APC interim national chairman, Bisi Akande; former National Secretary of the party, Iyiola Omisore; and Senator Fadahunsi.
He also noted that Oyebamiji had received backing from some opposition figures, including former governor and Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, as well as members of the Accord Party.
Akpabio urged Oyebamiji to prioritise infrastructure and other projects capable of delivering tangible benefits to residents if elected, saying the people expected measurable improvements in their living conditions.
He called on Osun residents to shun violence and participate peacefully in the election, describing the poll as an opportunity for them to determine the direction of the state.
“The message to the people of Osun is clear: come out peacefully on Saturday, exercise your franchise and choose a future of greater development, stronger opportunities and closer alignment with the centre,” he added.
