The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has denied reports that he is lobbying to become the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike, who reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, said he did not need to occupy a position in the campaign council to work for the President’s electoral success.
The minister’s position was contained in a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
Reports had emerged suggesting that Wike was among prominent APC leaders and government officials being considered or lobbying for the campaign council’s DG position.
But dismissing the reports, the minister said he had not discussed either the leadership or membership of the proposed campaign council with anyone.
Wike explained that he was currently outside Nigeria taking a break after spending more than a month supervising government projects in the FCT.
He said his activities during the period included commissioning completed projects, launching new ones and inspecting ongoing projects, particularly those expected to be completed and commissioned in December and January.
Wike said his priority upon returning to the country would be the continued implementation of the FCT administration’s mandate in accordance with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He added that he would also remain committed to strengthening the President’s electoral prospects in Rivers State and the FCT.
“I do not need to be the DG or even a member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
The minister’s latest declaration comes amid early political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections, with attention increasingly focused on the structure and leadership of the APC’s campaign machinery.
