Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, addressed speculation surrounding Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s possible re-election bid in 2027.
Speaking in an interview, Wike refused to make a direct commitment, warning that such discussions could ignite unnecessary political tension in the state.
When asked if he would support Fubara for a second term, Wike replied:
“Let’s not bring up what can cause an unnecessary crisis. We still have two years. Let us focus on helping the governor deliver governance. Rivers people want development, not second-term debates.”
He stressed that his priority was ensuring stability and continuity in governance.
Reacting to claims that he still influenced appointments in the Rivers State executive council, Wike dismissed the allegations as baseless.
“I have no candidate. Even if the governor comes to me for advice, I’ll only tell him not to destroy what we’ve built. Move the state forward,” he said.
On the reported tussle over the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, Wike blamed mischief makers for fuelling confusion.
“There was never a disagreement. Those who want to cause crisis are the ones bringing up who is the leader or not. Leadership is not by shouting.
“The governor handles administration. But political leadership is a different matter,” he explained.
