Having not yet seen a general theatrical release, it looks like controversial horror movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is getting a sequel. Although it may not be too surprising for a horror movie that has been getting a lot of attention to gain a sequel this early on, the news still came as a surprise to fans of the dark take on the bear from the Hundred Acre Wood. On Monday, the official Twitter account of Blood and Honey shared a simple image of the movie title with a bloody number 2 dominating the picture, as well as the tag, “Friends will gather…To take revenge.”
Blood and Honey was just one of the many low-budget horror movies to take the world by storm in 2022. After years of flashy, big-budget-low-scares horror fair from some of the bigger studios threatened to dumb down the horror genre, the Covid-pandemic seemed to lead the genre back to its roots – dark, gory practical-effects driven stories that do a lot of a relatively small budget. The film initially gained attention when it released a trailer depicting horrifying versions of classic children’s characters Pooh and Piglet setting out on a murderous rampage.
Thanks to the original stories of Winnie the Pooh having fallen into the public domain, the characters have become fair game for anyone to use in their own interpretations, and filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield certainly didn’t hold back in his vision for what became of the loveable bear. While the movie is set to get a new theatrical run in February, it seems that more Blood and Honey is on the cards in the near future.
While it seems that Frake-Waterfield is ready to milk his Winnie the Pooh horror based on its viral popularity and the quickly announced sequel, the filmmaker previously revealed that it won’t be the only public domain work that will be getting the genre-bending treatment. He previously said:
While the desecration of childhood characters may not be for everyone, there is certainly a vast niche to be plundered…or perhaps that should be slaughtered. Either way, Blood and Honey has tapped into what seems like being a new wave of ultra-violent, nasty horror movies such as Terrifier 2 that will rival any “video nasty” of the past and then some. Expect to see more news about Blood and Honey 2 soon.
