Okonkwo explained that before the National Assembly went on recess in December, lawmakers had agreed that electronic transmission would be guaranteed as part of the electoral framework. There was unity on the provision, and the system was expected to stay intact.
However, when legislators returned from recess, Okonkwo alleges, Tinubu’s phone call changed everything. “Within the space of one week after their return, the earlier position was reversed, and the arrangement that guaranteed mandatory electronic transmission was dismantled,” he said during an interview on Arise Television.
He also warned that new provisions were introduced into the electoral law, which he described as “demonic sections designed to subvert democracy.” Okonkwo emphasized that such moves undermine transparency and public confidence in Nigeria’s elections.
Beyond the legislative issue, Okonkwo lamented what he sees as the media’s shift in role, noting that journalists who once challenged military rule are now, in his view, ridiculing opposition figures calling out government actions.
