A Nairobi woman, Grace Mwende, has shared a heartbreaking story of love, betrayal, and financial loss after investing heavily in a relationship that left her broke and emotionally shattered.
Speaking during an interview, Mwende revealed that she met her husband at just 19 years old. From the very beginning, she became the main provider, covering almost every expense — from transport during their dates to funding several business ventures that never succeeded.
While working in Isiolo, Mwende said she regularly sent her boyfriend money for his visits and even paid for his return fare. When the two finally moved in together in Nairobi, she shouldered all family expenses, while her husband stayed at home claiming to be working on “business plans.”
At one point, Mwende gave him KSh 17,000 to start a small enterprise. Later, he asked for an additional KSh 47,000 for another business that failed to take off. Still trusting him, she added KSh 50,000 to start a wines and spirits shop — which also collapsed without explanation.
The most painful blow came when he convinced her to invest KSh 300,000 in a high-return deal that turned out to be a scam. Despite the losses, Mwende continued supporting him and even used her KSh 750,000 savings to build him a house in Meru.
Her heartbreak deepened when she discovered that her husband had been cheating with other women. To make matters worse, after entrusting him with her ATM card for safekeeping, he returned it with only KSh 9 left in her account.
Eventually, the man abandoned her, leaving Mwende with debts and the heavy responsibility of raising their two children alone.
Now, Mwende is using her painful experience to warn other women about the dangers of financially supporting partners who refuse to contribute equally. She says her story is a lesson in self-worth, caution, and financial independence.
“Never build a man who isn’t building you,” she said. “Love should never blind you into destroying your own future.”
